Truck carrying 'extremely dangerous' radioactive material found after it was stolen in Mexico
Wed Dec 4, 2013
Sci-guy: There was a similar incident in Thailand in 2000. It seems Cobalt 60 has been discarded as scrap metal and re-used in metal products several times around the world. In the Thailand incident only a few of the junk yard workers received dangerous doses of radiation, not any family members or …
Warning: Scientists say gas cans carry risk of explosion
Wed Dec 4, 2013
You mis-remember the gas can issue in the 1970's. The hazard was not spontaneous ignition of the gas can in the trunk. It was the possibility that a rear end collision was likely to spill or rupture the can even in collisions that did not damage the vehicle's fuel tank.

US advises carriers to comply with China air zone
Fri Nov 29, 2013
The story is a bit confusing since it says Carriers Advised and shows a picture of an aircraft carrier. However, the text of the story makes clear that they are referring to civilian airlines, or carriers, not the military ship. Some might call it appeasement but it's only reasonable to not put civi …

Wed Nov 27, 2013
In reply to: The Knouse House #11 Short term rental of aircraft wouldn't help if the airlines can't get the additional gate space and take-off/landing slots they would need at the departure and destination airports. Furthermore, the rental rates would be much higher, just like daily rental of a …

Large employers cite Obamacare 'Cadillac' tax in reducing benefits
Mon Nov 25, 2013
The excise tax makes good sense. Companies that offer extremely generous health insurance for upper level employees are actually giving them an untaxed benefit, and one that is beyond ordinary needs: it is in the class of a luxury. If the company paid the employee a correspondingly higher salary ins …
Confused about the 'nuclear option?' What you need to know
Thu Nov 21, 2013
The GOP filibusters of judicial nominees was not about their lack of qualifications. The GOP leaders have stated that they object to filling those 3 vacancies on the DC Court of Appeals, period. It's not because they don't like Obama's nominees: it's because the court is presently split 4:4 between …
Democrats drop the 'nuclear' bomb, so what happens next?
Thu Nov 21, 2013
At the present this simple majority rule only applies to nominees for presidential appointments to posts like courts and the cabinet. Times have changed and the filibuster is now being used by a minority to prevent action on just about everything. I have no doubt that if the GOP ever gets a Senate …

Thu Nov 14, 2013
To all those whining about the IRS getting involved in your healthcare, get serious. The IRS already has authority to investigate every aspect of your personal finance to verify that what you claim on your income tax forms is true, and that you aren't claiming tax benefits you don't deserve. The IRS …
